You just gotta read this

If you've ever wondered why it is that with all the time I've spent in Korea, surrounded by Korean people, immersed in the Korean language that I still don't speak Korean more than to tell a rude cabbie his mother's got a bald pussy then you need to read this post over at my friend Dave's blog. It's hilarious!

Wow! What an insightful and powerfully written umm.... uhhhh.... thing!
I said "see you next month" wrong to April when we were eating at Outback on our Hong Date. SHE didn't understand either. Neither did her friend. Even though I said the individual words and both understood.
April mentioned how Korea only speaks one language so they aren't used to learning other languages. We discussed how that might be the cause of their terrible troubles with languages. There are only a handful of countries that speak a single language. Like Cuba, Germany, Czech. Rep., Japan, Poland, Columbia, Chile, Saudi. You can exclude Poland, Germ. and Czech cuz they are surrounded by other languages and almost everyone in Europe speaks a few.
However, I've taught Chileans and they are AWESOME at learning English! So that ain't it.
And no country in the world studies English more than Korea. They spend more money on it, take more TOEFL/TOEIC and aptitude tests than any other country. Yet they consistently score somewhere in the middle.
And it has been declaired by many Korean officials as their second language already.
The best Korean teacher I've ever seen is my friend Scott's 3 year old, Alex. So I figure it's gotta be the Koreans' "training", (in the classrooms), that snuffs out their linguistic abilities.
So I can only take advantage of Alex's instruction for another couple years. I better hurry.
